I Like You - You’re My Next Mistake
With some bands you know from the beginning that it's a matter of time until they play the big stages of this world. Flight Attendant is such an example. And who has anything against a flight attendant? That's what the four musicians from Nashville thought. “They usher you on a journey somewhere new, through the sky, handing you tiny bags of pretzels, as your rocket across the precipice of space itself. ”F.A. And like one, they take off with us.
Band got to know each other through common interests, circles of friends and long evenings. Karalyne (lead vocals, piano, certified sommelier, unpredictable and eclectic) met Vinny (vocals, guitar, quite inventive as an award-winning bartender) while mixing cocktails and filling wine glasses - Nikki (vocals, violin, wine lover who brings elegance and glamour to the band) also joined: Flight Attendant was born. With drinking buddy Derek (drums, lager lover, always brings the three down to earth) the adventure could start. It sounds a little like the American dream, only without the dishwashing. Flight Attendant is well aware of this. The music industry, they say, will always have a dark side, but the opportunity every musician has these days is greater than ever. “The music industry will never be pure of heart. It will always take more talent than just musical talent to find a serious audience - but at least with the internet now, we all have a chance of being heard.” F.A. She also listened to Charles Yingling, who produced her debut album. Of course, it bears her name.
Let me be your honeysweet tonight
The album starts powerfully with Man of Chaos. That violins and strings are 'in' and can sound like horses, we know at least since the HU brought the wild Mongolia to us in Europe. That it can sound so frivolous, sexy, we learn with Flight Attendant. A pretty good start into the album. The song I like You is also really rock'n roll - snotty, danceable and with a wink at dating life.
Dogs got the indie touch, as more than once I want to move the sung note up a bit, only to give up and get lost in the flow. 'Nonchalance and I don't care' vibe. The drive has made this song my favorite gem. Right up there with Cry Baby, the band's first single release. Singer Karalyne talks about how she's had enough of complaining about her life (you should tell that to the Germans) and how she became an absolute badass. The song is also a prime example of why the band and Karalyne are compared to No Doubt and Gwen Stefanie. But that's intentional, because this band is considered their absolute shining star in the sky: “No Doubt is a band that really effortlessly blended rock and pop well enough to be mainstream, and still have their own soul and sound. We draw a lot of inspiration from how they navigated the pop space as a band.” F.A. But also Tame Impala and classical music play an important rule “Vivaldi and Beethoven reign heavy on our minds and fingers” F.A.
That there's more than one genre peeking out is clear pretty quickly. That they can process it so elegantly and excitingly, all the better. But one has to admit honestly: Front woman Karalyne is really a jewel for the band. What she does with her voice, I haven't heard like this for a long time. Playfulness in the voice, sometimes soft and fragile, only to give everything again. Who can loll with the voice? Girl Crush over here...
So melodically they soak the genre rock. For example, we have Fresh Gasoline, a song that has oriental belly dance and tango character, In the Pines, a somber song that reminds of folk songs and folklore evenings, and Teach Me How to Lie, which has a kind of ABBA riff and provides a lot of fun. For the band it is their absolute favorite song. Quite a lot came together during the production of the piece, which makes this song a bit of a challenge live. Of course, when you master it, it's an adrenaline rush. “..but now that we have it down, it has become the best song in our set to dance to … super fun to perform” F.A.
Speaking of genre mix - the single Honeysweet has the talent for THE pop ballad. It is also their most intimate song, created around concern of a mutual friend. “We wrote it after a troubled night, where the next morning our friend wouldn’t answer their phone or come to the door, and we were worried they may have harmed themselves. Thankfully, they did not. So, we wrote this song for that friend - and all friends- as a reminder, that when the world closes in - to lean on the people in your life that can help you through the dark times.” F.A. A reminder that we are not alone in the world. You can say you're lucky if you can count such a great band among your friends.
What is surprising when listening to the album is how diverse and changeable the band is in its expression. Sure there is the common thread that puts rock in the spotlight. But that happily knots itself together freely with other threads - classical, pop, folk....
Which brings fun? Exactly that.
