Cheery - A Plea
I love it when pieces of music surprise and convince with their complexity. That's what happened with A Plea by Cheery. A request that I am only too happy to grant.
The band originally hails from Kansas and currently lives and works in Liverpool. The band's trademark? Cheery combines cinematic instrumentation with introspective lyrics and captivating vocals to create a heartbreaking and deeply layered set. Influenced by the dream-pop styles of the Alvvays and Japanese Breakfast, Cheery develops a timbre that could almost be considered lyrical storytelling.
"A Plea" tells the story of how one's own self-confidence is projected onto one's partner - and then you have a cycle of resentment and defensiveness. It's a lyrical negotiation about one's own worth, wrapped up in multi-layered and colorful chapters. After all the reflection, the song ends with a plea for self-confidence (I will not be any other than I am, just for me, and for only me. ) The band has deliberately tried to put these inner doubts into a whimsical composition that acts as a commentary on the absurdity of life.
If you are looking for a sound that is far removed from the boring, mainstream choirs and brings the complexity and surprising moments of harmony back to life, Cheery is the right choice.
