Joe Bennick - winter
The German singer-songwriter guild is alive! How good to know that they still exist, the people with musical subtlety and German lyric fascination. Ergo, the new album 'winter' by Joe Bennick is an indispensable part of the cultural treasure. I like to compare the singer with Reinhard May, because of the lightness and simultaneous depth in his songs. Based on poems by well-known and lesser-known authors ( Erich Kästner, Theodor Fontane, E. E. Cummings, Anne Dorn and E. Marlitt ) he sets the enchanted words to music to create a magical soundscape. In 2021 he was awarded the German Singer-Songwriter Prize of the German Pop Foundation.
Bennick's music is captivating in its simplicity. Minimalism is punctuated here and there with more instruments and background vocals, but Bennick with his guitar remains the center of the action. It feels a bit like a private living room concert. So intimate is the atmosphere of the sound pearls already over the headphones. The album contains English and German songs. While the English tend more towards folk - with a tendency towards good mood songs - the German ones are pure magic.
Was kränkelt mein Herz an dieser Sehnsucht - what ails my heart from this longing
winter' has become an album to pause and dream. My favorite pearl winter from the album hits it to the heart. Onomatopoeic, the colors and lights of the cold season are described here. And although spring is marching in so slowly, this picture is drawn so carefully that you almost want to press 'Repeat The Winter' for the last three months. Dreaminess has a new name. The other gems also line up in this melancholic, hopeful key. Like a storyteller, Bennick chronicles a time of silence and loneliness. But even when it seems that eternal winter prevails outside, one's heart warms as soon as the first notes sound. A hymn to the cold season. Rated valuable.
