KALK¥L - Lazy Sunday Tapes

Actually, KALK¥L could have existed almost ten years ago. That's because Phillip Soddemann and Thomas Woschitz moved to Mannheim, and thus to the creative scene, around the same time. Although the city is manageable, the two actually only met in early 2020. A jam session turned into a friendship in which one finishes the other's sentence. "It's always amazing how life plays out. A person who is still a stranger becomes a friend overnight, and you can't imagine life without him. It's as if he's always been there."

It was an inner flower picking

Those words come from producer Michael Nowatzky, who recognized and encouraged the talent and vibe of the guys. Together they created the EP 'Lazy Sunday Tapes' with its six sound pearls. We call it Bedroom Pop with a decent dose of Indie and LoFi. Influences come from the genres of Stoner Rock, Hip-Hop, Alternative of the 90s and the spirit of Woodstock. A colorful mixture, which is due to the casual vibe of the newcomers. Just go for it.

Sundays in the bathrope …

Rarely have I experienced an EP whose title is so truthfully reflected in the songs as with Lazy Sunday Tapes. It's as if the songs have fallen into a magic potion that captures the magic of 'Sunday morning in a bathrobe'. It sounds something like this:

The first song Better resounds like a statement on the balcony, with megaphone in one hand, the coffee in the other. It doesn't really work without an alarm clock.

I love you (...Bob Ross) is a tribute to the artist Bob Ross. Instead of watching breakfast television, the duo prefers to watch the cloud painter as he turns white into gray. I love these voice overs in songs, which always seem like a colorful passe-partout. In this case very meditative. Our protagonist is chilling on the sofa...

Speaking of collage.

In Vida Dulce, the two are inspired by the colorful paintings of designer Kerstin Backes - also responsible for the album cover. A sound of disco balls emerges. Funky vibes foreshadow a high where we dance through the apartment. Theme: just have a good time! But not only that they create.... They also created a postcard set with quotes from their songs. And since their hearts are in the right place, part of the proceeds will go to the social project Aufwind.

The first chimes of When I'm Down remind me a lot of elevator music, only to pick me up like Hair with "background shouts" and a mood to match - who knows what you just lit on the sofa... Like The Way You Grow comes from flirting with your Monstera and cheering it on as it grows. Prince Charles has done that too. The mantra also sticks nicely in the ear.

Blanket Song brings the EP to a close. It's the ideal song to snuggle back into bed. That was also the idea behind it. The song came out of a burnout as a chill pill. "That feeling when you go to your grandma's house and she covers you with a thick wool blanket. The moment you feel small, that's exactly what you need. Then you close your eyes and fly."

On the whole, it has become fresh and varied music, with distorted guitars and dreamy vocals that make Sunday quite big.

Maybe other days of the week will come up in the next albums....
