Mountain Fire - Between Shadows

Get the yurt out. We're going hiking. To go with it, we'll listen to music made for folkloric adventures in the woods. The three graces Myriam, Shelly and Marie combine their vocal and musical skills to create a mystical and nature-inspired work of art. The EP 'Between Shadows' (via Shamanic Vibes) was released at the end of April and contains eight sound gems.

Mountain Fire comes from a world of legends and myths, a world that has not yet lost its connection to nature. However, the three find inspiration not only in nature, but also in everyday life and in the music of role models like First Aid Kit. It has become music for all kinds of folklore fans.

The emphasis Mountain Fire put on the vocals, harmonies, echo games and spherical soundscapes. The journey of Between Shadows begins with Down The Line. A light yet full - two-part throughout - folk pop song. The chorus could have happily remained monophonic at one point. Otherwise, a dynamic introduction to the nature-inspired EP. In Tide you can feel their longing, it becomes dramatic and mystical. The background vocals are very strong here. There's A Fire reminds me a lot of ABBA's positive folk pop, singing about the good in the world. With a piano solo up front that somehow sounds like it doesn't belong, the three sing about love. "when I tell you that I love you what I mean is that I'm yours, eternally" Hach...

If I Were is the most leisurely of the songs. It refers to all the elements of nature and is strongly reminiscent of Nordic bard songs around the campfire. Vent de haut is my favorite pearl of the three. It has everything that mysticism connected people need. An enticing rhythm with an arc of tension that builds slowly. Goosebumps moment. Add to that a rather darker mood and elf singing. Et voilà: Already you see yourself roaming the woods with shamans. The songs are sung in French. Floating Somewhere gives everything again and comes directly on second place of my Mountain Fire Favorites. It starts minimalistic, only to build up into a full sea of sound. A sad song full of melancholy and glimmers of hope. The songs Vent de haut and There's A Fire are also available as radio versions.

All in all, 'Between Shadows' has become quite a great work, bridging the gap between modernity and folklore in a playfully light and yet very profound way. Mystical, dreamy and you notice, I can't get out of my enthusiasm. A world of sound that I can't get enough of.

You can find me in the forest...
