The Pinpricks - Anyway
Not many people would have thought that Kiel could be home to the best indie rock bands. Prejudices or not, after the first sounds of this band even the last doubts will be swept away.
The Pinpricks have come to stay. Singer/guitarist Ronja Kaminsky and bassist Nils Degenhardt founded the band in 2018 and since then they look back on a successful creative phase with three released EPs. Started as a trio, The Pinpricks now sees itself as a duo that can refer to a fixed drummer circle for concerts. Marketing solo, they have now created a solid international fanbase with more than 350,000 streams on Spotify. They have toured major stages around the world, including Wacken Open Air, and shared the stage with bands like Mando Diao and Placebo. They have over a hundred concerts to their credit.
Inspired by bands like Muse, Placebo and Royal Blood, the guys from Kiel manage to make their indie rock sound like Nordic honesty and the big wide world. Especially the 80s and 90s they wanted to capture in their music. In addition, punk and garage rock from recent times, et volià ready is the colorful basic mixture. Contemporary and timeless.
The song formation, they say, is a spontaneous one. Either based on a cool baseline or on a song from another band. On their new album 'The Stuff Is Poison' there would be songs that took an eternity to go through their creation process, others that were finished within one night. Lyrically, they remained true to their North German heart, a heart that always wants to tell the truth, giving clear and direct edge. This allows them to write honest lyrics that always reflect their attitude, be it in a party song, be it in a Ukraine war song. The creation of the new album took two years. They were supported by producer Alex Henke from Boogie Park Studios in Hamburg. He helped them to make the album sound like it would sound live. What works with three instruments? What would work the same way live? The result is an aggressive, yet delightful sound where singer Ronja can really show herself. Her personality is reflected in a voice that sounds like she's "a bastard daughter of Janis Joplin and Sheryl Crow." Rough and vulnerable, defiant and like la Liberté of the rock world.
Anyway as the first single release tells us in which direction their music will go. It's a song that grabs you immediately and catapults you back to the 2000s indie rock era. Musicians who know their craft, coupled with a passion that springs from the soul of rock. Anyway is also a confident statement about their music. "As a band, you always get a thousand pieces of advice to do something, that you should sing in German or something. Our response is, yo, thanks for your advice, but we're going to do it the way we want to do it." That's what the song sounds like, a declaration of war on French barricades.
It will be difficult to stay calm with these sounds.
